Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Lithium and Solar important to overland and off grid?

Lithium power offers up to 50% more capacity over traditional lead-acid chemistry batteries, giving you more usable power on your adventures. Lithium batteries also generally have a longer warranty period by the manufacturer. They are also considerably lighter in weight!  Solar panels offset power consumption, as well as replenish the reserve capacity of your battery bank during the day to keep your lights, refrigerators, and electronics running all night.

Does lithium require special charging or storing?

Yes and No! Lithium batteries do require a higher charge voltage to get them up to full capacity, so the correct solar charger or converter is needed. Lithium batteries do not need to be pulled out of your camper for the winter; charging them to 80% and disconnecting the power load is fine!

Why is a DC-to-DC charger important for lithium batteries?

Due to the higher charge voltage needed for lithium batteries, simply connecting a lithium bank to an alternator is not sufficient. A DC-to-DC charger will increase the voltage for proper charging and maintain a constant amperage to the lithium battery bank. A travel trailer's 7-way cord will not provide enough voltage or amperage to the battery bank for any significant amount of charging while on the move.
